What We Do

We support the sustainable development of Global Aquaculture

Spring Genetics is a company dedicated to the genetic improvement of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) supporting the sustainable development of Global Aquaculture.

We manage a family and within family selection program for tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in our state of the art breeding nucleus located in Miami Florida. This program is designed and supervised by our sister company Akvaforsk Genetics, located in Sunndalsøra Norway. Akvaforsk Genetics and our geneticists are the pioneer on developing genetic programs for the aquaculture industry, with experience in developing genetic programs for more than 15 different species worldwide (i.e. shrimp, salmonids, tilapia, etc.). Akvaforsk Genetics was the responsible company for developing the GIFT program (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) in 1988 in Asia, becoming this the first genetic program developed for tilapia industry in the world.

Our breeding program aims to improve the most relevant commercial traits in tilapia such as growth rate, FCR, disease resistance, fillet yield and robustness.

Our breeding program is designed to produce at least 300 families every year providing us with a wide range of selection of those groups that have the best performance, yield and other traits. Once the top performing groups are selected these are shipped to our multipliers and clients worldwide for fingerling production.

Our breeding program aims to improve the most relevant commercial traits in tilapia such as growth rate, FCR, disease resistance, fillet yield and robustness.

Relevant Commercial Traits

One of our main selection traits is growth rate, this means that our fish will require higher amount of feed but in a shorter production cycle Hideyoshi Segovia
